"My cup runneth over".....umm but to What?

Ever heard someone say, "My cup runneth over?" I feel like I've heard it mostly from my grandmom and all her southern, Sunday-hat-wearing, church-going gal. pals.

This probably now antiquated saying comes from the King James Version of Psalm 23:5: "Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over."

Translated, "my cup runneth over" means just this: “I have more than enough for my needs”.

I prefer the NLT version of Psalm 23:5 which makes this meaning more apparent: "You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies. You honor me by anointing my head with oil. My cup overflows with blessings.

After meeting this morning with my "Girl God Group" (aka Bible study), this thought was put on my spirit...

My cup overflows...but where is it flowing to?

No matter who you are, where you live, or your socioeconomic status, each of us has something to be grateful for - blessings to be shared.

But where, when, how, and to whom are we sharing those blessings?

I believe a huge part of spreading the Gospel as Christ's disciples to all nations is in how we live. Lost people don't want lip service. Broken hearts don't want empty assurances.

Following Christ does not equal clicking the "follow" button on Christianity. It requires that we actually try to walk the walk of Jesus.

Part of that walk is recognizing the eternal blessings God bestows upon us each day. For example, did you travel in a car, plane, or train today? If you did, did you make it to your destination safely? THAT is a blessing from God. Do you have breath? THAT is a blessing from God.

Given this "Kingdom perspective", ALL of our cups are overflowing with blessings.

So where are you allowing them to flow?

Many of us want to "white knuckle" our blessings in fear that they will be taken away from us if we don't.

But here's the deal... keeping blessings to yourself limits the opportunities to share the love of Christ with others.

IMPORTANT NOTE: I am NOT talking about tithing, or sharing your riches with others...that is another blog!

I am talking about paying your blessings forward!

In other words...

Give God the glory for anything that is good in your life.

Show grace where a grudge would be easier.

Develop gratitude when grief tries to steal your joy.

Consider the needs of others before considering the wants of yours.

So go out today, thank God for the overflowing blessings He has given you, and actively fill the cups of others with Christ's love!

xoxo,
